Hi Gay. I find the shelves cause uneven slumping as well so I take them out and only fire on the bottom shelf - my kiln is quite small and can only have two shelves anyway so it's not too inefficient just using one. I use different schedules based on what glass I'm using, how many layers I'm fusing together and how much I want it to fuse or slump. I mainly use system 96 glass now because of the colors and compatibility so don't have any schedules for float glass at hand. System 96 schedules are available on their website: http://www.system96.com/Pages/FiringGuideC.html
A book I found useful is Warm Glass - a complete guide to Kiln forming techniques by Beveridge, Domenech and Pascual.

What are you typically slumping and are you fusing at the same time? Do you have a programmer on your kiln and how many steps can it have? The below is a typical schedule for combined fusing and slumping for glass 6mm thick or 2 sheets of 3mm and 50cm diameter:
1 - 0-550C in 2.5 hours
2 - 550-600 in 30 mins
3 - hold 600 for one hour
4 - 600 - 720 in 2 hours
(5 - hold at 720 for an hour if using two sheets which haven't been fused previously)
6 - 720 - desired temp for effect in 30 mins. Maybe 780 to start if you are not sure. Keep a diary of your attempts at different temps!
7 - Hold at desire temp from previous step for an hour
8 - decrease to 540 in 30 mins
9 - hold to anneal a 540 for 2 hours
10 - decrease to 440 over 3 hours
11 - decrease to room temp over 5 hours

Now I tend to fuse in one firing then slump in a second firing to have more control over the outcome - but the above program should work.

Cheers

Hi Nadine. I have just found your comments on warm glass fusing. I have a 'pottery' kiln which I am trying to fire glass in. It has several shelves and I was hoping to use about 3 or 4 shelves for my float glass. But I can't seem to get the firing schedule right. Either one layer devitrfies or another layer doesn't even slump. Would you mind giving me your firing schedule? Many thanks.
PS your plates are amazing.

First you both will have to reach Australia and settle down and catch up! I will plot and plan a visit I promise before old age sets in! It was sad for me to read about the preganant ele. I wish wild animals were treated with more respect and used a little less for personal gain.
